Clinical and Mycological Studies on Tinea Cruris



Abstract
The authors performed clinical and mycological studies on tinea cruris of 194 out-patients who had visited dermatologic clinic of Sung-Sim Hospital, College of Medicine, Chung Ang University, during 1 year from August, 1980 to July, 1981.
The results were as follows;
1. The incidence of tinea cruris was 4.0% of total 4,820 out-patients and 32.1% of total 600 out-patients with superficial fungal diseases.
2. Tinea cruris was more frequent among male, and the ratio of male to feamle was 18.4: 1.
3. The distribution of age group for tinea cruris varied from the second to the eighth decade, but most of them were in their third decade.
4. The monthly prevalence of tinea cruris was high in July, August and September.
5. Coexisting infection of tinea cruris with other types of superficial fungal diseases was noted in 57.2% of
the cases. Patients with tinea cruris and tinea pedis were highly observed in 87.5%. 6. By lesional distribution,
a) Bilateral involvement was noted in 90 cases (46. 4%).
b) Unilateral involvement was noted in 32 cases (16.5%).
c) Extension from the groins to other sites was noted in 27 cases (37. 1%).
7. Clinical history of application of corticosteroid ointment was noted in 112 cases(57.7%), and recurrent infection with tinea cruris was noted in 121 cases (70.0%).
8. Positive rate of KOH scraping was 84.0%, and positive rate of culture on ordinary Sabouraud¢¥s dextrose agar media was 66.5%.
9. Trichophyton rubrum (48.8%), Candida albicans (24.8%), Trichophyton mentagrophytes (24.0%) and Epidermophyton floccosum (2.4%) were isolated in tinea cruris.
